Social Security

EU/EEA citizens are usually covered in France by their home country’s system. If you’re going to be a resident in France, you should register in the social security system and get a ‘numéro de sécurité sociale’.

Non-EU/EEA citizens must have a residency permit to be eligible for social security coverage in France.

Find more about healthcare in our Welcome Pack for our new Nannies and Teachers! If you need help with administrative paperwork, don’t hesitate to come by the Resource Lounge.

The emergency numbers in France are the 18 (fire service) and 15 (emergency services)

Finding a doctor

The cost of visiting a doctor may be reimbursed – you must keep all paperwork to ensure this.

There are several ways to find a doctor in France – your neighbours will normally happily recommend a local doctor as will the local pharmacy and the staff at the town hall. You can also search in the French yellow pages – Pages Jaunes – for your area. In the key word section “Quoi, Qui” type in “médecin”; and specify the area where you are searching.

You can also use the L’Assurance Maladie website – it is in French but easy to use. Click on the section “un professional de santé” (health professional), in the section marked “Profession” type “medecin generaliste” (General Practitioner) and in the section marked “Ou?” (Where) type your post code or the town name. Click “Rechercher” (Find) for your results.

A standard visit to the Doctor is around 23 Euros and usually you pay the doctor directly, in cash or by cheque (French banks only) – they generally do not take credit cards. You usually won’t have to wait long to see a doctor – often an appointment can be made the same day.

Doctors are not allowed to advertise in France, including whether they speak English or not, however you can call the Doctor’s surgery and ask if they speak English if it is important.

I find it very rewarding that you can see the kids progressing! What I also like about this job is that everyone is very friendly and we do things after work together, which is nice.

I like that I teach to different kids everyday and to different groups of age! I love this diversity.
